Scarsdale Youth Lacrosse Association
Girls Division
overview
Scarsdale Youth Lacrosse Association (SYLA) offers youth lacrosse programs for girls throughout the year in Fall, Winter, and Spring.
PRE-SEASON WARM UP (3/4, 5/6, 7/8)
The pre-season program is held in March through early April as a clinic-based format at the Sports Underdome in Mount Vernon. These practices allow our players to develop their skills and prepare for the upcoming Spring lacrosse season. This pre-season warm up program runs for 1 hour sessions on Saturday afternoons (typically between the hours of 1pm-4pm), and is mandatory for our 5/6 and 7/8 players. The cost of the pre-season warm up program (6 sessions) is included in Spring tuition. The pre-season program will also include special “skills sessions” for draw control, defensive footwork, shooting, and goalie training.
SPRING (K-2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8)
Spring is the main season for lacrosse. It is in this season that we offer our most robust programs comprised of both practices and several games for the younger grades (K-2) and travel teams for the older grades (3/4, 5/6, 7/8). The programs typically run for 8 weeks beginning in early April (outside if fields are available, or at the Sports Underdome if weather does not permit us to go outside) and end in early June.
For K-2, we offer weekly clinics on Sundays and typically host a "Playday in the 'Dale" tournament with other K-2 teams from the area. The K-2 program is considered foundational and begins to prepare the players for the future by working on skills and drills, but also beginning to learn the rules of the game and how to play in an introductory small game setting during our home playday.
At the 3/4 grade level, we offer a 3 day a week travel team-based program comprising of practices, games against other local lacrosse teams, and typically attend a local tournament. At the 3/4 level, we will have multiple teams of EVEN ability, mixing 3rd and 4th grade players evenly.
At the 5/6 grade level, we offer a 3 day a week travel team-based program comprising of practices, games against other local lacrosse teams, and typically attend 2 tournaments. We also host a playday on the Scarsdale High School turf in April for NYC based teams. At the 5/6 level, we will have stratified teams based on ability.
At the 7/8 grade level, because Scarsdale Middle School offers a 5-day-a-week Modified Lacrosse school program, we supplement that program by offering weekend games throughout the season (typically Saturday and Sunday afternoons). The 7/8 team also typically attends 2 tournaments, concluding their season before club lacrosse tournments begin.

FALL CLINICS (K-2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8)
The intent of the SYLA Fall lacrosse programs is to offer an alternative in the Fall season for those girls who may not play traditional fall sports and or would like to continue playing lacrosse during the off-season in a fun and competitive environment. These programs are offered for all levels of players from beginner to advanced. The season is comprised of approximately 7-8 weekly clinics, with a few games and or tournaments. For the older grades (5/6 & 7/8), we also add an optional 30 minute “wall ball” session during a weeknight each week. SYLA holds 2 mandatory evaluations during the Fall (October) in order to stratify our Spring 5/6 and 7/8 teams. SYLA has a no-cut policy, but it is required that every player who wishes to play in Spring SYLA lacrosse participates in evaluations. Evaluations are run by the professional paid SYLA coaches. While our teams at these grade levels are stratified by skill level, every player who would like to play lacrosse will make a team. We take beginners into our programs at every grade level.
